These are base rates. Many US states add local and county taxes on top, so your real rate can be higher. Check with your state or province before filing.

How US sales tax works

The United States has no federal sales tax. Instead, 45 states plus the District of Columbia levy their own, and most of them add county, city and special district taxes on top. The base rate in this calculator is the state rate; the real rate you pay is usually higher.

A few examples of the spread: California starts at 7.25%, Tennessee at 7%, Washington at 6.5%, Texas at 6.25%, New York at 4% (New York City adds 4.5%), and Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state sales tax at all.

Because local rates change often, we flag the table as directional. The note under the tool reminds you to verify the rate for your exact ZIP code with your state authority. Avalara and TaxJar both publish free ZIP lookup tools if you need the precise number.

How Canada's GST and HST work

Canada uses a 5% federal GST everywhere. Some provinces harmonize it with their provincial tax into a single HST: 13% in Ontario, 15% in the Atlantic provinces. Others keep the GST separate and add their own PST on top: British Columbia 12% combined, Quebec 14.975% combined.

The calculator combines the rates for you, so selecting British Columbia applies 12% in one step. Select a province and the combined rate is used directly.

As with the US table, rates and provincial rules change. Verify before filing, especially for cross-province sales, which have their own place-of-supply rules.

Common questions

What is the US sales tax rate?

There is no single rate. State base rates run from 0% (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) to 7.25% (California), and local taxes push most effective rates higher.

What is the difference between GST and HST in Canada?

GST is the federal 5% tax. HST is the harmonized version used in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, combining GST and provincial tax into one rate, 13% or 15%.

Why is the rate I pay higher than the state rate?

Counties, cities and special districts add their own taxes. Seattle, for example, has a combined rate around 10.35% against a Washington state base of 6.5%.

Do I charge sales tax on services?

It depends on the state. Some tax services, some do not, and many carve out specific categories. Check your state's rules before charging or collecting.

How do I find the exact sales tax rate for my ZIP code?

The state base rate is a starting point; local taxes add on top. Free ZIP lookup tools from Avalara and TaxJar give the precise combined rate for any address. This calculator shows the base rate, and the note above reminds you to verify.

Is sales tax the same as VAT?

No. VAT is charged at every stage of the supply chain with input credits; US sales tax is charged once, at the final sale to the consumer. If you sell across borders, use the VAT calculator for EU and international buyers.
